Personality ProfilingEssex Mind Coach Hypnotherapy Chigwell

Defining personality can be tricky.  And that is good news in a way. Who would want to be pinned like a butterfly to a card and described as this type of person, or that type of person?  Who would want to be reduced to an equation?  Being difficult to pin down can be part of the charm and adventure of being human.  And yet at the same time we all enjoy finding out a bit more about ourselves.  Believe it or not every time we interact with another person we are carrying out a kind of profiling that allows us to decide how to best to respond, whether to trust or be suspicious. Whether the person is being serious or has just made a really funny remark. Whether the person was intentionally rude, or really didn’t mean offence.
We make these judgement and evaluations every day and you could view this as a kind of profiling.

How are Personalities Understood?

First of all, your personality is about who you are in the world and in your own mind. You might think that you are the same every day in all places and in all situations. Or your might feel that you can change: that come people can bring the best out of you, whilst some situations keep you from expressing yourself.

Type and Trait theories of personality assume that there are types  of person or that persons have traits which govern their behaviour.   So the ancient Greek Hippocrates argued there were four essential temperaments: choleric, sanguine, melancholic, and phlegmatic.  We are familiar with this way or thinking.  We have all classified someone as the “overly dramatic”, “miserly”, “needy”, “stand offish”, “lively” type at some point.

Psychodynamic and some developmental and social learning theories focus on various aspects of the personality becoming integrated over time.  They see the personality evolve through experience and maturation. They might focus on balance with the psych or personal mental experiences of the world. They might focus on how behaviour has been modelled by example or determined as a response to a stimulus.

Situationism looks at how the characters of a situation influences behaviour, whilst

Interactions considers the interplay between the individual and environmental factors which might include people or any of the above.

Working with Personality

As a therapist I am very aware that if you have only a hammer you only bang nails.  That is to say a dedication to one particular theory could potentially blinker a person to the reality experienced by the client in front of them.

WSN or Warriors Settlers and Nomads is both a system for understanding and profiling personality, and for doing therapy!
It helps me to identity and use the best approaches for working with you toward the change you require.

Just as there are three primary colours which combined give us all the colours we can see, so WSN works with 3 parts of the personality that contribute to your overall character.   We call the parts your Warrior, your Settler and your Nomad.  and whilst it might sound extremely simplistic, it is actually more sophisticated than there is room in this blog post to explain. You could understand your Warrior, your settler or your Nomad as your Firm, Friendly or Fun part.  Or as your Controlling, Caring and Charismatic part if that helps.

However simplicity is not only attractive it is also very useful.  When you begin to understand these parts within yourself, you can immediately begin to piece together a much better understanding and appreciation of yourself, who you are and why you experience the world and others as you do. You can even become aware of why others see you differently to the way yourself.

How WSN Can Help You

Self-understanding can lead to self acceptance and from there to greater self-esteem and confidence. When you understand you own personality better, with WSN you can begin to spot the dominant personality types or parts in other people, allowing you to predict and understand with greater accuracy how others are likely to behave.   This is an excellent skill to have in the work place for easing office tensions and factory-floor difficulties.  Socially, it helps in understanding friends and social interactions better.  And WSN is also useful in your love life for gaining a better understanding of past relationships and how to choose  a compatible partner, or understand your current lover.
