Warriors, Settlers and Nomads – Counselling & Coaching.(WSN)
Here in my Chigwell Hypnotherapy Practice I often use the WSN counselling and coaching programme.
WSN isn’t simply a counselling & coaching programme it is much more than that.
It offers a working theory of personality that allows WSN practitioners to profile their clients. To read more about Personality Profiling and how WSN can help you – follow this link – CLICK HERE.
The ability to quickly and accurately identify a client’s way of being in the world allows me to deliver therapy much more suited to my client. It allows both you and I to identify where conflicts exist within your personality and where potential stressful stimuli will be found in your work, social and love life.
WSN also allows YOU to better understand yourself and those with whom you live, love and work. Having an understanding of your personality frees you from the doubt, or worry that you ought to be a different way. It also gives you the ability to access your resources.
So if your personality is:
Predominantly Warrior
– You can learn to tap into the resources of your Settler and Nomad part.
– You can learn to understand how you might be perceived by another Warrior, by a Nomad or Settler and you can understand that perception with greater ease.
Predominantly Settler
– You can learn to tap into the resources of your Warrior and Nomad part.
– You can learn to understand how you might be perceived by another Settler, by a Nomad or Warrior and you can understand that perception with greater ease.
Predominantly Nomad
– You can learn to tap into the resources of your Settler and Warrior part.
– You can learn to understand how you might be perceived by another Nomad, by a Warrior or Settler and you can understand that perception with greater ease.
During our therapy sessions together you will have experienced some of the ways in which WSN has helped you gain insights into a past problem, or a perceived future difficulty, and has taught you something about who you are and your way of being in the world. You will have learned how you can “step into” Warrior, Settler or Nomad mode to suit your need and situation, or to take your Warrior, Settler or Nomad with you where needed. This document is about applying WSN to others.
Applying WSN to Others.
What follows is intended to help you to identify the WSN type of others. When you are able to determine the general personality type of your colleagues, partner, parents or children you are in a position to understand them better, avoid and resolve conflicts, handle their feelings and yours with greater skill.
Remember that not all Warriors, Settlers, or Nomads will express all of the attributes below. And though an attribute might seem negative – bear in mind it is usually a resource, and if you have it you can draw you on it for your benefit, if someone else had it you could help them to use it too.
The Warrior

Warrior – warrior
The Warrior is the controlling part. This part is seen early in the life of the child. The Warrior child learns the pleasures that come from being wilful, stubborn and gaining control over his or her surroundings.
It is intolerant and impatient. It is the part that rebels against being told what to do, and gets annoyed, frustrated or angry when others won’t do as they are told. The aim of the Warrior part is always to come out on top. Warriors can always make their presence felt. They will be calm and unruffled in an emergency. They are not good at taking orders, negotiation nor diplomacy.
The Warrior – like all the other parts can be further defined by the way the part is expressed
The Dictator – autocratic and commanding. More selfish than Leader or Crusader, and given to outbursts of rage. It will seek to control others using intimidation or fear. Often has double standards. Very difficult to deal with and often proud of that fact.
The Leader – Firm, often quiet and determined to get their own way. They are stubborn and often unwavering in a goal. Less selfish than Warrior Dictators and more moderate – though they will become more selfish and controlling if it looks to them as though things are not going their way. They are often impassive. Having a poker face.
The Crusader is the one that has a great sense of what is right and will defend the right s of others, though can be dogmatic having difficulty in accepting the view of others. This one is less selfish, but has high standards and a strong moral code. The warrior’s ruthlessness and need for control is still there,
How to Identify A Warrior

Warrior – Queen
Negative Attributes
They can take a great deal of pleasure in being bad-tempered or unreasonable and may delight in selecting the words perfectly calculated to do maximum harm in an argument. They hate admitting they are wrong and can be jealous, and cynical. They might be rude and sarcastic. There can be feelings of self-doubt that will be hidden at all costs.
Physical Attributes
Warriors are less animated than Settlers and much less animated than Nomads. During conversations their body language and facial expressions do not alter much. A bit of a poker face at times, not giving much away. They are watchful and perceptive. Stress or anxiety leads to a tight posture and set facial expression that might appear hostile or irritable.
Often favouring a conservative appearance with a tendency towards black and navy blue, dark green and dark brown in the females – probably so that they cannot be easily seen by enemies after nightfall, or in the dark.
Difficulties
Pedantic, intolerant & impatient. Ruthless, rude and sarcastic. They can be prone to phobia, hypochondria, and have obsessive thoughts or patterns of behaviour. IBS, Ulcers, Digestive problems.
The Settler

Settler – Nurse
The Settler wants to be liked, accepted and appreciated. The Settler child at a very early age would have learned the pleasure comes from adapting to the moods of the primary care-giver. This is the caring and friendly part of the personality. They are trustworthy, caring, nurturing. Their intuition is very well developed so that sometimes they might really appear to have a sixth- sense and know what someone is feeling/thinking. They are tolerant, supportive and generally “nice people” to be around. This part is emotional, and sentimental. The Settler will be upset if he or she feels they have gone unnoticed or uncared for. They always look to see the best in others and are careful of the feelings of others. They have a tendency to put others before themselves. They are diplomatic, persuasive and can ride out disappointments, Great at counselling, negotiations, diplomacy.
The settler will be one of the following:
The Artisan – Quiet, conscientious, community-oriented. They do not tend to stand out in a crowd. They get on with things. Farming, carpentry, shop-keeping
The Carer – This one cares for others at least as much as for themselves, if not more so. There is a great drive to “make things better”. They are unselfish to an almost extreme degree, and will often suffer feelings of inadequacy – regardless of how others perceive them
The Philosopher – this one thinks a lot, and often has the instincts of a teacher. Even where the Settler Philosopher is not a teacher there will be an urge and desire to inform and spread information about people, nature, the universe. They are very good communicators and can shine at finding solutions to the problems of others.
How to Identify a Settler

Settler – Nun
Negative Attributes
They can be exasperating for those around them. Just as they are about to reach some success they can suddenly fall into negative behaviour and give up. Often the reason will be they they have decided they are not good enough, not got what it takes. The can be unassertive and lacking in confidence, and therefore can worry over making decisions and choices. They can be distracted and demotivated by the opinions of others, have a marked difficulty in saying “No” and feel the need to be liked.
Physical Attributes
The Settler nods and smiles in all the right places. When tense or anxious their gestures will gain in speed. Their facial expressions are easier to read and may have worry etched into their faces. Timidity and shyness can lead you to mistake them for warriors. The tendency is towards sensible clothes, mid colours that neither stand out in a crowd, nor hide in the dark.
Difficulties
Can be prone to shyness, depression or full-on melancholia. They do not often speak up for themselves, or express their needs.
The Nomad

Nomad – Entertainer
The Nomad is pleasure seeking. This type often learns more from friends or other children than from parents. It is the part that is all about fun, looking good and gratifying the senses. This is the charismatic and fun part. The Nomad can easily lift the mood of other people whether individuals or a group. They are easily bored and so like to have something going on – even if it is a drama or crisis. They live for excitement in one form or another.
The Nomad likes to be centre stage and the focus of attention. The nomad hates unpleasantness, but doesn’t have a very high moral code. It is the child part, self-centred. It is the actor part – and can play many roles to fit an occasion. They like to impress.
The Nomad can be expressed as:
The Entertainer – This one loves telling jokes, and is often a great mimic. They are hugely enthusiastic. Are you seeing the real person, or the part they are playing? With the entertainer it is difficult to tell. They might not even know themselves – but it is charm all the way.
The Traveller – the original Nomad. Though this one might not have a wanderlust, there is the instinctive drive to be on the move. This could be expressed moving from job to job, from one neighbourhood to another, from one lover to another. They walk away from situations without taking responsibility and are less jaunty compared to the other two.
The Trickster – this the one who could pull the wool over your eyes. If this one was criminally disposed s/he’d be a great con-artist. Think mountebank, salesman, insurance salesman. If you ran a sales business you might want this one selling your product or doing your PR. They are always personable and great at separating others from their money.
How to Identify a Nomad

Nomad – Gypsy Girl
Negative Attributes
They can appear feckless and can have difficulty in maintaining effort. They won’t show that they care very much, because they rely on personality and charm to win the day for them. They are prone to exaggeration, and cannot abide to defer pleasure. They can be tactless, and have difficulty with “boring” or routine tasks
Physical Attributes
Exaggerated behaviour. Enthusiastic gestures. During conversation head, face and body will all be animated, with fast, frequent and vigorous movement. Often noisy. Can be flashy/showy in their clothing, bright colours, bold patterns. Or they might present the idea that dressing up is not wearing a t-shirt with a stain on it.
Difficulties
They will have difficulty in planning and self discipline. They will not be methodical or patient. Their physical illness will be attended with more drama than those of the Settler or Warrior – often a little more “obvious” too. Hysterical blindness, vomiting, rashes
I have a great enthusiasm for WSN. It allows my clients to enjoy ease of change when working with me, and brings a lot of fun to therapy.
I owe a debt of thanks to Terence Watts, MCGI – the creator of WSN and the man who trained me in the use and application of the concept.
