Overcome with grief“Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force. Mourn them do not. Miss them do not. Attachment leads to jealously. The shadow of greed, that is.”

These are the words that Yoda spoke to Anakin in “The Revenge of the Sith”. I wonder how many people watching that scene thought back to a loved one they had lost?

When we lose someone it can seem like the heart has been ripped out of life itself.  Grief and bereavement are natural and understandable, and in a sense they honour those we have lost.

But grief can stop you from living. The pain of bereavement can be overwhelming, and its darkness creep into every aspect of life draining it of colour, texture and any enjoyment.

There is no right time to stop grieving. But if you find that you cannot look after yourself, you cannot work, you cannot live the life your loved one would have wanted because the waves of grief are crashing over you still – then perhaps it is Grief & Bereavement time.

There are different ways of working with grief & bereavement.  Some people want or need to talk, whilst others cannot bear to speak of the dead. There are ways of helping that suit where you are right now.

If the person or pet you have lost brought light to your life, then grief is like a shadow that blocks out your experience of the light you once enjoyed.   Once the grief has resolved you can enjoy the light of those memories of love once again, and experience normal sadness, not heart-breaking grief.
