“But its 2020!” The cry of bewilderment is far too familiar.
Homophobia at work is still prevalent today. In fact, there is a sense in which as we become more aware of what is unacceptable in the workplace and in society in general we also become more aware of how much injustice there is in the world – for example how much discrimination there is against bi-sexual or transgendered people.
It would be nice if the workplace was a sort of home from home. Those who find work a respite from home-life notwithstanding, we should all be at least as safe in our place of work as we are in our own homes.
Discrimination can be disorienting
When we encounter discrimination in the work place it can have a disorienting effect. Those who grew up believing they had no right to exist because of their sexuality may very well feel powerless to stand up for themselves – may not even feel they have the right to do so.
Those who previously thought they were well liked and respected could begin to doubt positive past experiences. Whilst those who do act against discrimination might very well wonder if they are going to find support among their colleagues – especially if there isn’t an active trade union equalities rep to turn to.
And then there is the potential backlash from those who might feel you are “playing the gay card” or “rocking the boat”
Hypnotherapy & Homophobia
If you suffer discrimination in the work place it can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, self doubt, cause insomnia, excessive worry – all sorts of issues. Just talking about these things can leave you feeling vulnerable to further attack and uncertain of an understanding and respectful hearing if you do talk about it.
With me you will find a compassionate and respectful welcome so that you can get stuff off your chest and out into the open – freely! This in itself can be liberating and therapeutic. But with the tools available to me – particularly hypnotherapy and Brain Working Recursive Therapy (or BWRT®) I could very well help you to find lasting relief from the psychological and emotional discomfort of discrimination. We can even work on your confidence and self esteem to cope better with situations when you return to work.
I offer a free thirty minute consultation to help you discover the right way forward in therapy for you. Bullies don’t impress me, but the strength, resilience and resourceful of my clients after therapy does.
